Electroencephalogram (EEG)

Electroencephalogram (EEG)

An Electroencephalogram (EEG) is performed by a technician using electrodes to detect problems in the electrical activity of your brain.

Your physician may have ordered your EEG test to:

● Diagnose seizure activity
● Diagnose reasons for confusion
● Evaluate head injuries, tumors or infections
● Evaluate changes that affect your brain

To prepare for the test:

● Wash your hair the night before the test
● Do not use any hair oils, sprays or conditioner before the test
● Avoid food containing caffeine and energy drinks for 8 hours before the test
● Do not consume any products that help you stay awake
● Check with your physician about changing or stopping your medications prior  to the test

An EEG causes no discomfort and is very safe procedure. You will need to lie still because any movement can alter the results. There may be flashing lights during your test. The technician is specially trained to care for you if the lights trigger a seizure during your test. The technician will apply 16-25 electrodes to your scalp with a sticky paste. The electrodes are connected by wires to a recording machine that converts the electrical impulses from your brain, into wavy line patterns that are stored on a computer disk.

A Neurologist interprets the test and will report the results to your physician.

A doctor’s order is required for an EEG monitor.
